Indonesia, represented by Customs, attended the series of BRICS\nCustoms Experts Meetings and BRICS Heads of Customs Administrations\nMeetings for 2026, held from 17\u201319 August 2026 in Chandigarh, India.<\/p>\n
In 2026, BRICS is under the Indian presidency, carrying the theme\n\u201cBuilding for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability\u201d.\nBRICS cooperation encompasses three main pillars: Political and\nSecurity, Economy and Finance, and Culture and People-to-People. Customs\ncooperation falls under the Trade, Investment, and Finance agenda within\nthe Economy and Finance pillar.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe involvement of Customs in this forum is not only a form of\nparticipation in international cooperation but also an effort to\nadvocate for Indonesia\u2019s interests through customs cooperation relevant\nto trade, cross-border supervision, technology, and capacity building,\u201d\nsaid Budi Prasetyo, Head of the Sub-directorate of Public Relations and\nCommunity Service at Customs.<\/p>\n
BRICS is an intergovernmental organisation comprising 11 member\nstates: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia,\nIndonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia\nhas been a full member of BRICS since 1 January 2025, following\ndirectives from the President of the Republic of Indonesia to strengthen\nIndonesia\u2019s global role, elevate the shared interests of the Global\nSouth, and utilise concrete BRICS cooperation for national interests and\nIndonesian development.<\/p>\n
During the BRICS Customs Experts Meetings and BRICS Heads of Customs\nAdministrations Meetings, Customs, alongside the customs administrations\nof member states, discussed several strategic agendas through the BRICS\nAEO (Authorised Economic Operator) Working Group, BRICS Law Enforcement\nWorking Group, BRRICS Digitalisation and Intellectualisation Working\nGroup, and BRICS Capacity Building.<\/p>\n
Customs\u2019 participation in this forum holds strategic relevance for\nIndonesia\u2019s interests. Discussions regarding the development of AEO\nprogrammes and Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRA) could open\nopportunities to support trade facilitation for businesses that meet\ncompliance and supply chain security standards, allowing for easier\ncustoms processes in partner BRICS nations. Meanwhile, law enforcement\ncooperation, including the implementation of BRICS Joint Operations and\ninformation exchange, can strengthen efforts to combat illegal\ncross-border trade, thereby supporting efforts to protect the public\nfrom its impacts.<\/p>\n
Discussions on digitalisation and artificial intelligence also\nprovided a space for exchanging experiences in developing more effective\ncustoms services and supervision, while capacity building cooperation\nsupports the enhancement of competence and knowledge exchange between\ncustoms administrations. Both areas offer opportunities for Customs to\nstudy the use of data and technology to support more efficient and\ntargeted services and supervision.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe development of international trade requires customs\nadministrations to become increasingly adaptive to technology and data.\nThrough BRICS cooperation, Customs has the opportunity to continue\nlearning, sharing experiences, and developing competencies so that\nservices to users become more efficient, while supervisory functions can\nbe carried out more accurately and precisely,\u201d said Budi.<\/p>\n
Indonesia\u2019s participation in BRICS 2026 thus serves not only as part\nof Indonesia\u2019s economic diplomacy but also opens concrete space for\nstrengthening customs cooperation.
