        "content": "<p>Indonesia athletes try out in Malaysia<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): After four months of training, national track<br>\nand field athletes will have to prove whether practice makes<br>\nperfect during two tournaments in Malaysia and Singapore which<br>\nstart this weekend. The tournaments are preludes to the 18th<br>\nSoutheast Asian Games.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian track and field association (PASI) has named 34<br>\nathletes to participate at the two meets which will be used by<br>\nother Southeast Asian teams as warm-up events for the Dec. 9-17<br>\nGames in Chiang Mai, Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>PASI's official in charge of the training program, Pieter<br>\nNoya, said on Monday that the 34 athletes he has groomed will be<br>\nsplit into two teams. Fifteen athletes are heading for Penang,<br>\nMalaysia from Aug. 18 to 20, and the rest will turn up for the<br>\nAnniversary of Independence championships in Singapore from Sept.<br>\n2 to 4.<\/p>\n<p>\"Our preparations ran as expected. Barring unforeseen<br>\ninjuries, we will keep at least 11 gold medals safe in our hands<br>\nduring the SEA Games,\" Noya told a hearing with the National<br>\nSports Council led by its chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar.<\/p>\n<p>\"Our team could gain more if they are willing to undergo a<br>\nmore vigorous stint,\" Noya added.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian athletes surpassed the target of winning seven<br>\ngolds in the last SEA Games in Singapore in 1993 by snatching 13<br>\ngolds, the first major haul since the 1987 Games at home.<\/p>\n<p>Such an outstanding performance put the national track and<br>\nfield athletes squarely in the spotlight, with rewards from PASI<br>\nchairman Bob Hasan, in the form of cash bonuses and houses,<br>\nbestowed upon them.
