Indonesia athletes try out in Malaysia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): After four months of training, national track
\nand field athletes will have to prove whether practice makes
\nperfect during two tournaments in Malaysia and Singapore which
\nstart this weekend. The tournaments are preludes to the 18th
\nSoutheast Asian Games.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian track and field association (PASI) has named 34
\nathletes to participate at the two meets which will be used by
\nother Southeast Asian teams as warm-up events for the Dec. 9-17
\nGames in Chiang Mai, Thailand.<\/p>\n
PASI's official in charge of the training program, Pieter
\nNoya, said on Monday that the 34 athletes he has groomed will be
\nsplit into two teams. Fifteen athletes are heading for Penang,
\nMalaysia from Aug. 18 to 20, and the rest will turn up for the
\nAnniversary of Independence championships in Singapore from Sept.
\n2 to 4.<\/p>\n
\"Our preparations ran as expected. Barring unforeseen
\ninjuries, we will keep at least 11 gold medals safe in our hands
\nduring the SEA Games,\" Noya told a hearing with the National
\nSports Council led by its chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar.<\/p>\n
\"Our team could gain more if they are willing to undergo a
\nmore vigorous stint,\" Noya added.<\/p>\n
Indonesian athletes surpassed the target of winning seven
\ngolds in the last SEA Games in Singapore in 1993 by snatching 13
\ngolds, the first major haul since the 1987 Games at home.<\/p>\n
Such an outstanding performance put the national track and
\nfield athletes squarely in the spotlight, with rewards from PASI
\nchairman Bob Hasan, in the form of cash bonuses and houses,
