Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and the countries contributing troops to\nthe United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have strongly\ncondemned the continuous attacks on UNIFIL, which have resulted in the\ndeaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers and injuries to several\npeacekeepers from other nations.<\/p>\n
According to an official statement from the Indonesian Ministry of\nForeign Affairs in Jakarta on Friday, this was conveyed by Indonesia\u2019s\nPermanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Umar Hadi, when reading\nthe \u201cJoint Statement on the Safety and Security of Peacekeepers\u201d at UN\nHeadquarters in New York on 9 April 2026.<\/p>\n
The joint statement was initiated by Indonesia and supported by\nUNIFIL troop-contributing countries and several other member states.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe strongly condemn the continuous attacks on UNIFIL, including the\nmost recent serious attack that claimed the lives of three Indonesian\npeacekeeping troops and injured several other peacekeepers from France,\nGhana, Indonesia, Nepal, and Poland,\u201d the joint statement read.<\/p>\n
The joint statement also noted that UNIFIL troop-contributing\ncountries, along with other member states and the European Union,\nexpressed deep concern over the increased tensions in Lebanon since 2\nMarch 2026 and their impact on the safety and security of peacekeeping\ntroops.<\/p>\n
They reaffirmed their full support for UNIFIL and its mandate as\noutlined in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, and urged all\nparties to take all measures to ensure the safety and security of\npeacekeeping personnel and premises in accordance with international\nlaw.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe safety and security of UN peacekeepers is non-negotiable, and we\nurge the UN and the Security Council to use all available tools to\nstrengthen the protection of UN peacekeepers in an increasingly\ndangerous environment,\u201d the joint statement said.<\/p>\n
They also called on the UN to continue investigating all attacks on\npeacekeepers promptly, transparently, and comprehensively, and to keep\ntroop-contributing countries informed of investigation progress,\nemphasising that those responsible for the attacks must be held\naccountable.<\/p>\n
In addition, the joint statement expressed deep concern over the\nsecurity situation in Lebanon, particularly the high number of civilian\ncasualties, extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, and the mass\ndisplacement of more than one million people.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe call on the parties to immediately return to the 2024 ceasefire\nagreement and respect UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006),\u201d the\njoint statement said.<\/p>\n
They also called for an end to hostilities in Lebanon, de-escalation\nof tensions, and for all parties to return to the negotiating table,\nwhile reaffirming strong commitment to Lebanon\u2019s sovereignty,\nindependence, territorial integrity, and unity.<\/p>\n
They also paid tribute to the dedication and service of all UN\npeacekeepers who risk their lives for international peace and security,\nand expressed appreciation to all troop-contributing countries.<\/p>\n
