Makassar (ANTARA) – British Ambassador to Indonesia Dominic Jermey
said the UK welcomed cooperation with Indonesia through Hasanuddin
University (Unhas) on research into organic waste processing.

“Processing organic waste will be able to turn waste into resources
with high economic value. This step also strengthens the two countries’
commitment to addressing climate change,” Ambassador Jermey said on the
sidelines of a visit to Unhas in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on
Monday.

In addition to waste-processing research, he said, the two countries
had agreed to work together on policies to reduce carbon emissions
comprehensively and achieve the Net Zero Emissions (NZE) target,
including by strengthening the development of the green economy.

Unhas Rector Professor Jamaluddin Jompa said the cooperation would be
replicated in a number of districts and cities in South Sulawesi. “This
is an outstanding collaboration. For Unhas, it is about using research
to produce practical solutions,” he said.

He said the visit offered a direct view of efforts to turn waste into
something useful, adding that climate action must deliver immediate
benefits not only for the environment but also for the economy and
people’s social welfare.

“The collaboration is not limited to waste management; it also covers
the development of the Alope chicken, a source of national pride and a
symbol of a local economy based on local natural resources,” he
said.

Through a circular-economy approach, the collaboration aims to
achieve two goals at once: protecting the environment and sustainably
improving community welfare.
",
