        "content": "<p>Southeast Asia is entering a new chapter of economic development. The\nregion is no longer just an emerging market, but one of the world\u2019s most\ndynamic centres for manufacturing, the digital economy, investment, and\nglobal supply chains. Alongside this, energy demand is rising sharply.\nNew industrial zones, data centres, electric vehicles, urbanisation, and\nmanufacturing transformation all require a larger, more reliable, and\ncleaner electricity supply. In this context, the energy transition can\nno longer be viewed solely as an emissions reduction agenda. It has\nbecome an economic strategy, an industrial strategy, an investment\nstrategy, and a regional security strategy. A country that can provide\nclean energy at competitive prices will be better placed to attract\ninvestment, strengthen export competitiveness, and build the industries\nof the future.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia is in a highly strategic position to take on this role.\nThis is not only because it is the largest economy in ASEAN, but because\nit possesses a combination of advantages rarely found elsewhere: a large\ndomestic market, diverse energy resources, abundant renewable energy\npotential, strategic mineral reserves, a geographic position connecting\nthe region, and strong regional diplomatic experience. These advantages\nbecome increasingly relevant as ASEAN moves towards an economy that is\never more dependent on electricity. Data centres, electric vehicles,\nlow-carbon smelters, electronics manufacturing, the semiconductor\nindustry, and the digital economy all require a far more reliable\nelectricity system than was needed a decade ago. In the future, the\nquality of electricity supply will be one of the main indicators of\neconomic competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the discussion on energy transition needs to shift from\nmerely replacing energy sources to building a comprehensive energy\nsystem. Renewable energy is important, but it will not deliver maximum\nimpact without strong transmission networks, energy storage, energy\nefficiency, digitalisation of systems, regulatory certainty, and\ncompetitive financing. This systems-based approach is a shared need for\nIndonesia and ASEAN. Electrification will continue to increase, but its\nsuccess depends heavily on the quality of electrical infrastructure. A\ncountry that can deliver a clean, stable, and efficient electricity\nsystem will become a magnet for regional investment. Conversely, a\ncountry that lags in building its energy system risks losing\nindustrialisation opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia actually has a very strong foundation. Solar energy\npotential is spread across almost the entire archipelago. The country\u2019s\ngeothermal resources are among the largest in the world. Hydropower\nstill has significant room for expansion. Bioenergy can grow alongside\nthe strength of the national agricultural sector. Wind energy has\nprospects in various coastal and island regions. Beyond this, Indonesia\nalso holds reserves of nickel, copper, bauxite, and various strategic\nminerals that are key raw materials for global energy transition\ntechnologies. However, resource wealth does not automatically translate\ninto leadership. What matters is the ability to convert potential into a\nproductive system. This is where Indonesia\u2019s major task lies.\nStrengthening transmission networks, interconnecting systems, building\nenergy storage, improving project quality to make them bankable, and\ndeveloping domestic industry must all proceed simultaneously. With such\na foundation, Indonesia can become not just a user of clean energy\ntechnology, but also a producer, exporter, and a vital node in the\nregional supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>In the regional context, one of the most strategic initiatives is the\nASEAN Power Grid. The idea of building a cross-border electricity\nnetwork has long been on ASEAN\u2019s agenda. However, its urgency is now far\ngreater. Electricity interconnection is not merely a project of\nsubmarine cables or transmission lines, but an instrument to strengthen\nenergy security, enhance system efficiency, and expand regional\nelectricity trade. That said, building the ASEAN Power Grid is not just\nabout physical infrastructure. The bigger challenges lie in harmonising\nregulations, establishing electricity trading mechanisms, ensuring\nfinancing certainty, setting technical standards, sharing investment\ncosts, and synchronising national energy policies. Without a strong\ngovernance foundation, the regional network will struggle to develop\noptimally.<\/p>\n<p>For Indonesia, these developments present a huge opportunity. Its\ngeographical proximity to Singapore and Malaysia, combined with the\nclean energy potential in Sumatra, Kalimantan, and the Riau Islands,\nopens up the possibility of making Indonesia a supplier of low-carbon\nelectricity as well as a hub for green industrial growth in the region.\nThe development of Batam, Bintan, and Karimun is an interesting example.\nThis area is strategically positioned to connect clean energy, data\ncentres, digital manufacturing, logistics, and regional connectivity\nwithin a new economic ecosystem. If designed properly, the BBK area\ncould become a laboratory for Indonesia-ASEAN energy cooperation as well\nas a model for green industrialisation in the region. However,\ncross-border energy cooperation must not be interpreted as a reduction\nof national energy sovereignty. On the contrary, if designed with the\nright principles, regional electricity trade can become a new instrument\nof Indonesia\u2019s economic diplomacy. The key is simple: domestic needs\nremain the priority, industrial value-added is built within the country,\nand every cross-border project must deliver tangible benefits to the\npublic, the business sector, and national development. With this\napproach, exporting clean electricity is not merely an energy\ntransaction, but a way for Indonesia to expand its economic influence in\nthe region.<\/p>",
