        "content": "<p>The Director General of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices at the\nIndonesian Ministry of Health, Lucia Rizka Andalucia, stated that\nIndonesia is actively involved in the development of tuberculosis (TB)\nvaccines as part of an effort to accelerate the elimination of the\ndisease in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is currently no TB vaccine available worldwide. The\ndevelopment of this vaccine is underway, and fortunately, Indonesia is\nactively involved in the development of the TB vaccine,\u201d Lucia said\nduring the IASMED 2026 Annual Meeting in Jakarta on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Lucia noted that vaccines represent a crucial modality in the effort\nto eliminate TB, alongside the medicines and diagnostic tools that are\ncurrently available. According to her, Indonesia still faces a heavy TB\nburden. Previously ranked third among countries with the highest number\nof TB cases globally, Indonesia has now moved to second place, following\nIndia.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the elimination of TB has become one of the President\u2019s\n\u2018Quick Win\u2019 programmes in the health sector, alongside the Free Health\nCheck-up (CKG) programme and the strengthening of hospital\ncapacities.<\/p>\n<p>She added that conducting clinical trials domestically could help\nIndonesia gain faster access to vaccines once they become available. \u201cIf\nwe had not conducted clinical trials for vaccines during the pandemic,\nwe would not have had rapid access to vaccines,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding TB vaccine development, Lucia mentioned that Indonesia\ncurrently has three candidates that can be accessed and developed for\nnational interests. One of these is the M72 vaccine candidate, developed\nthrough a collaboration with GSK and the Gates Foundation, which has now\nentered phase 3 clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Indonesia is developing TB vaccine candidates\nindependently through Bio Farma and Lipotek, as well as another\ncandidate developed by Etana in collaboration with CanSino. The\ncandidates developed by Bio Farma and Lipotek, and Etana and CanSino,\nare still in the early stages of clinical trials, specifically phase\n1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully, all of them prove to be ethical and safe,\u201d Lucia\nconcluded.<\/p>",
