Indomobil's plant fit for Timor cars<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP) The national carmaker PT Timor Putra Nasional's
\nplan to assemble cars at Indomobil's plant in Tambun, West Java,
\nis likely to proceed smoothly, several automotive executives said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
Herman Z. Latief, vice president of PT Krama Yudha Tiga
\nBerlian, said this would not pose technical problems because
\nIndomobil's plant did not need major alterations to assemble the
\nso-called national cars.<\/p>\n
\"There will be no problem,\" said Herman who is also chairman
\nof the Indonesian car manufacturer's association.<\/p>\n
He cited an example of when his company, Mitsubishi's sole
\ndistributor, assembled gallant Suzuki cars in the early 1980s.<\/p>\n
PT Toyota Astra Motor's technical director, Adirizal Nisar,
\nshared this view saying that it would be fine for PT Timor to
\nassemble its cars at Indomobil's plant, which is mainly used to
\nassemble Suzuki vans and sedans.<\/p>\n
\"In principle, it's okay, PT Timor only needs to install Jig
\nfacilities then the Timor cars could be assembled in Indomobil's
\nplant,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Basically, he said, the car had a standard measure: \"With such
\na standardized measure, it is possible for PT TPN (Timor Putra)
\nto assemble its cars at another company's plant,\" he said
\nyesterday on the sidelines of an exhibition for Toyota Astra
\nMotor's new model of Kijang.<\/p>\n
Timor Putra, owned by President Soeharto's youngest son Hutomo
\nMandala Putra, has signed an agreement with PT Indomobil, the
\ncountry's second largest car assembler, to assemble Timor sedans
\nat Indomobil's plant in Tambun.<\/p>\n
Timor Putra is allowed to start assembling its cars there from
\nApril this year.<\/p>\n
Timor Putra's finance director, Sudjaswin E.L, said earlier
\nthat his company's plant in Surabaya, East Java, which is still
\nunder construction, would assemble sporty Timor jeeps from next
\nyear.<\/p>\n
He said his company would start building a plant in Cikampek,
\nWest Java, this month to manufacture Timor cars.<\/p>\n
The government granted pioneer status to Timor Putra in
\nFebruary to produce a national car with Kia Motors of South
\nKorea. This is an exclusive arrangement which will give Timor
\nPutra a series of tax breaks, including exemptions from import
\nduties and luxury taxes.<\/p>\n
