Indomobil has not applied for 'Porche car permits'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government has not yet received an
\napplication from the Indomobil Group to assemble Porche sports
\ncars, a senior official said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Effendi Sudarsono, the director general for metal-based,
\nmachinery and chemical industries, said yesterday his office had
\nnot received the group's application to assemble the luxury
\nPorche cars.<\/p>\n
\"We have not heard of Indomobil's plan to assemble Porches
\nhere, \" he told reporters after the 1996 Automotive Engineering
\nExhibition's official opening.<\/p>\n
There are 338 companies from 24 countries, including Malaysia,
\nJapan, Australia, Germany and South Korea, at the show. It was
\nalso supported by local automobile makers such as PT Kramayudha
\nTiga Berlian Motors, PT Timor Putra Nasional and PT Indomobil
\nGroup.<\/p>\n
Effendi refused to comment when asked if Indomobil's plan to
\nassemble Porche cars was acceptable.<\/p>\n
\"At the moment, we try to avoid letting luxury cars into
\nIndonesian market, except those used by diplomatic corps,\" he
\nsaid, adding that the government had no a specific rule to
\nrestrict the production of luxury vehicles, such as Porches.<\/p>\n
Indomobil Group president Soebronto Laras announced yesterday
\nhis company had been appointed by Porche of Germany to assemble
\nits 2-plus-2 coupe sports cars.<\/p>\n
\"The Porche team is here to discuss all preparations required
\nincluding the amount of investment, the volume of production and
\nthe location of assembly,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Soebronto said arrangements would take about 10 months,
\nincluding the establishment of press-mold machines.<\/p>\n
\"If we could assemble Porches here, Indonesia would be the
\nfirst in Asia to assemble Porches, because other countries like
\nMalaysia and China are just importing the cars,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Effendi said he doubted the car would be widely purchased by
\nIndonesians. He warned companies about the high costs of
\nmanufacturing luxury cars.<\/p>\n
\"Well, Porche is a very sophisticated car, not to mention its
\nexpensive, which will require a large amount of funds to
\nmanufacture while people who would buy it are very limited,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
But Soebronto, without disclosing the investment, said the
\nPorche project would not be too expensive.<\/p>\n
\"We will only assemble the car, besides Indomobil has already
\nestablished an assembly plant,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Indomobil assembles Suzuki, Mazda, Nissan, Volvo, SSangyong,
\nAudi and Volkswagen vehicles. The last three brands are scheduled
\nto be launched here early next year.<\/p>\n
Soebronto was confident the car, estimated to cost Rp 400
\nmillion (around US$168,000), would be purchased by middle-income
\nand rich people in local and regional markets.<\/p>\n
\"We are certain of the market for Porches in Asian countries
\nincluding Japan because the car will be modified for right-hand
