Lutfi Heyder's letter in Bisnis Indonesia, June 8 (The Jakarta
\nPost June 15), is interesting and I am very grateful to him for
\nnot discriminating against us. He shows that by employing
\nChinese-Indonesians in his business.<\/p>\n
As an Indonesian of Chinese descent, I would like to express a
\nnumber of thoughts on the indigenous\/nonindigenous relationship.<\/p>\n
I have seen that several of my friends have assimilated
\nthemselves. They fulfill the criteria set by Lutfi Heyder,
\nalthough perhaps with some shortcomings.<\/p>\n
At the time of the riots, the immoral masses did not look
\nwhether the victims were citizens who had assimilated themselves
\nor who had committed collusion.<\/p>\n
Most of the victims were nonindigenous citizens who did not
\nunderstand the increase of staple food prices, the fall of the
\nrupiah, etc.<\/p>\n
This distinction between indigenous and nonindigenous, doesn't
\nit come directly from the government? Take, for example, marking
\nnonindigenous citizens' identification cards.<\/p>\n
When the riots were raging in Jakarta, many inhabitants of
\nBumi Serpong Damai, Villa Melati Mas and Kelapa Gading (housing
\ncomplexes with a strong resident diversity) put notices like
\nMilik Pribumi Murni (owned by pure indigenous people) in front of
\ntheir houses. Who discriminates?<\/p>\n
Indonesians of Chinese descent do not ask for special
\nprotection but they do ask for the right to lead a decent life as
\nhuman beings.<\/p>\n
