Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Russian President Vladimir\nPutin to end the war in Ukraine during a meeting on the sidelines of the\nShanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit on Monday (31\/8\/2026).\nThis appeal was made as India faces the threat of high tariffs from the\nUnited States following its purchase of Russian energy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must move from an endless war towards the end of war, towards the\ncessation of hostilities,\u201d Modi stated. He added, \u201cEvery day the war\ncontinues, humanity takes one step back.\u201d<\/p>\n
Modi\u2019s call comes as Russia intensifies its military pressure on\nUkraine. The Russian Ministry of Defence stated on Monday plans to\nlaunch \u201cmassive attacks\u201d against Ukrainian energy infrastructure, just\ndays after a major strike on an ammunition depot that killed 31\npeople.<\/p>\n
Attacks on energy infrastructure during the winter are expected to be\none of the greatest challenges for Kyiv. This situation has heightened\nconcerns that Ukraine will once again face significant pressure on its\nenergy systems when winter arrives.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, India is also facing pressure from Washington\nregarding its relationship with Moscow. The US House of Representatives\nis expected to pass a bill proposed by Senator Lindsey Graham, which\ncould impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that are among the top\nfive purchasers of Russian oil or gas, including India and China.<\/p>\n
Russia is the largest supplier of crude oil to India. In June and\nJuly, Russian oil accounted for more than 50% of India\u2019s oil imports,\nwhile its share reached almost 43% up to 24 August; from April to July,\nRussian exports to India surged by nearly 60% year-on-year to over US$34\nbillion, or approximately Rp601.8 trillion.<\/p>\n
