Indian dancer performs in Bandung<\/p>\n

Renowned Indian dancer-choreographer Astad Deboo brings three
\nnumbers of his Dance Expression to Selasar Sunaryo Art Space in
\nBandung on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The performance, scheduled to take place at the amphitheater,
\nis not his first. Previously, he performed in Surakarta, Central
\nJava, and earlier this week at Taman Ismail Marzuki arts center,
\nCentral Jakarta at an event in the ongoing JakArt@2003 arts
\nfestival.<\/p>\n
Among world-class dancers, Astad Deboo is known for his
\ninnovative pieces drawn from classical Indian Kathak and Khatali
\ndances, combined with his knowledge of dance styles the world
\nover. While most dancers dedicate their performances to the Hindu
\ndeities Shiva and Ganesha as a form of worship, Astad Deboo, who
\nstudied modern western dance techniques at the London School of
\nContemporary Dance in London, devotes his dances to space and the
\nbody, which are integrated into his choreography and accompanying
\nmusic.<\/p>\n
Born in Navsari, Gujarat, the 56-year-old recipient of The
\nSangeet Natak Academy Award for Creative Dance from the Indian
\ngovernment is now active with The Action Players group, a group
\nof deaf actors in Calcutta, India.<\/p>\n
For his show in Bandung, Astad, who is considered to be a
\npioneer in modern Indian dance, will experiment with forms and
\nconcepts of stage performance, promising a stunning aesthetic
\nexperience. In artistic terms, the setting will be prepared by
\nartists from Selasar Sunaryo Art Space.<\/p>\n
The performance will be closed with an open discussion on
\nAstad Deboo's works with Saini KM, senior lecturer of Indonesian
\nArts Institute (STSI) in Bandung.<\/p>\n
