Increase of teachers' pay<\/p>\n

It may be excessive of me to thank the government of President
\nAbdurrahman Wahid and Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri for
\nthe increase in my salary and functional allowance, effective
\nApril 3, 2000.<\/p>\n
The increase is below our expectations, but we know the
\ngovernment is experiencing a great number of difficulties.
\nTherefore we all understand the government's plan to increase
\ncivil servants' salaries in two stages.<\/p>\n
The above does not mean that I do not support the
\ndemonstrations by my colleagues, especially those in West Java.
\nThe action to demand justice launched by the Indonesian Teachers
\nAction Forum and the Committee of Struggle for the Betterment of
\nTeachers Welfare has boosted my pride as a teacher.<\/p>\n
In this era of reform, we no longer want to be made objects of
\npolemic which never results in firm steps to improve the lives of
\nteachers.<\/p>\n
I think the justice demanded by the teachers is positive and
\nmust be seriously responded to by the government. Currently the
\ncommunity faces many serious problems, so the sizable increase in
\nthe structural allowances of high-ranking officials is a
\ncontradiction.<\/p>\n
The officials in the executive and legislative branches
\nreceiving the increases should also be willing to lead a life of
\nconcern, although to a different extent.<\/p>\n
In these difficult times the people have high hopes the
\nofficials in the executive and legislative branches and the
\nbureaucracy will become fighters, and not the other way around.
\nThus, the people's hopes for the enforcement of law and justice,
\nso loudly proclaimed during the election campaign, will be
\nrealized more quickly. This is to avoid further lies that keep
\nthe people ignorant.<\/p>\n
The justice demanded by teachers also reflects the people's
\nwill. I think, however, that we should not exaggerate the
\nsocialization of democracy. It means that with the increase in
\nteachers' salaries and functional allowances, which is relatively
\ninsufficient, we are also required to remain consistent in the
\nspirit of reform that has claimed so many victims.<\/p>\n
In short, I will never oppose the injustice now taking place.
\nOn the other hand, we must maintain the fighting spirit of
\nteachers as best as we can.<\/p>\n
