'Incompetent politicians must rely on bribery'<\/p>\n
Allegations regarding money politics in the recent gubernatorial
\nelection have upset the public, including people on the streets.
\nThe Jakarta Post talked to some of them.<\/p>\n
Ichen, 22, is a street singer who has worked the public buses
\nin Greater Jakarta for almost two years. He lives in Petukangan,
\nSouth Jakarta, with his friends. He moved from Bangka to Jakarta
\nfive years ago:<\/p>\n
Only unqualified and incompetent people would get involved in
\nmoney politics. If the gubernatorial candidates were genuinely
\nqualified, they would compete with each other fairly in the
\nelection.<\/p>\n
However, if the issue regarding money politics is true, it
\nimplies that Sutiyoso had a lot of money to pay people to support
\nhim. If he had common sense, he would use his money for the
\ngreater benefit of the city, and ultimately his reputation. For
\ninstance, by providing jobs for street children and people like
\nus.<\/p>\n
Ryan, 24, has been a tattoo artist for more than three years
\nat Blok M, South Jakarta. He moved from Surakarta, Central Java,
\nto Jakarta five years ago and now resides in Petukangan, South
\nJakarta:<\/p>\n
Frankly, I'm really upset that city councillors and officials
\nare engaged in money politics.<\/p>\n
Low-income people like us struggle hard for a better living,
\nyet they teach us a bad example.<\/p>\n
I cannot deny the reality that money politics is still
\nwidespread in the country, particularly among bureaucrats. The
\nrevelations of bribery and city councillors have hurt ordinary
\npeople deeply.<\/p>\n
Well, it was just a matter of a great deal of luck and money
\nthat Sutiyoso won the election, despite the fact that many people
\nhate him.<\/p>\n
However, I'm sure he will have a hard time keeping in line the
\npeople who don't like him.<\/p>\n
Jakarta will remain the city it already was -- unpleasant and
\ndisorganized under his leadership.<\/p>\n
Wahyu, 23, is a salesman for a private company in Tangerang.
\nThe native Jakartan resides in Pondok Gede, Bekasi, with his

I was terribly disappointed upon hearing about money politics
\nduring the recent gubernatorial election. What will happen to the
\ncity in the hands of a corrupt leader like Sutiyoso? I daren't
\nimagine it.<\/p>\n
I'm sick of all this talk of money politics among the
\ncountry's leaders. They're all corrupt.<\/p>\n
Well, like it or not, I have to accept the reality. He is the
\ngovernor now regardless of his rejection by the public.<\/p>\n
The most important thing is that he should look back at his
\nterrible track record. Jakarta would be much better if Sutiyoso
\nlearned something from his mistakes in the past. Otherwise, the
\ncity will remain exactly the same.<\/p>\n
As a matter of fact, I don't really care too much who rules
\nthe city. My main concern is that the person should be able to
\nimprove the quality of life here.<\/p>\n
