Inauguration set for new regency<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City Council and the city administration agreed
\non Tuesday that the inauguration of Pulau Seribu (Thousand
\nIslands) regency, which has been postponed twice, would be
\nconducted next month.<\/p>\n
"We agreed that the regency could be inaugurated in the middle
\nof next month, while the regent would be installed later,"
\ncouncil chairman Edy Waluyo announced after meeting with Deputy
\nGovernor for Administrative Affairs Abdul Kahfi at City Hall.<\/p>\n
Edy hoped that the proposed bylaws to elevate the status of
\nSeribu Islands from a district to a regency, consisting of two
\ndistricts, could be completed prior to the inauguration.<\/p>\n
The council had earlier criticized the city administration for
\nplanning to inaugurate the regency, located off the shore of
\nNorth Jakarta, before the bylaws were approved.<\/p>\n
The council also objected to the appointment of M. Rahardjo,
\ncurrently the head of the city's fisheries department, as the
\nislands' regent. They also made the objection because the
\ngovernor did not consult with the council on the matter.<\/p>\n
City administration spokesman Muhayat said on Tuesday that the
\ngovernment would probably appoint an acting regent if they had
\nnot found the right person to hold the post by the middle of next
\nmonth.<\/p>\n
According to Law No.33\/1999 on city administration, the
\nappointment of a mayor and a regent should be approved by the
\nCity Council.<\/p>\n
Several councillors urged City Governor Sutiyoso to propose
\nmore than one candidate as regent.<\/p>\n
The councillors said that Rahardjo was unable to lead the
\nSeribu Islands regency.<\/p>\n
The regency, which consists of about 110 islands, is home to
\nabout 17,000 people and is a popular tourist destination.<\/p>\n
Governor Sutiyoso had initially planned to inaugurate the
\nregency in June to coincide with the city's 474th anniversary,
\nbut it was delayed, pending the issue of a government regulation
\non the Seribu Islands regency. (jun)<\/p>",
