As many as 12 members of the Indonesian Armed Forces will be
\nput before a military tribunal. It is considered that the 12
\nsoldiers reacted excessively in facing student demonstrators, who
\nwere protesting the increase in public transport fares, in
\nUjungpandang. The incident left three students dead and a number
\nof other individuals injured. It was the commander of Military
\nRegion VII\/Wirabuana, Maj. Gen. Sulatin, who announced this
\ndecision to the press on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The commander's action was quick and correct. His appeal for
\neverybody to exercise restraint so as not to cause more trouble
\ndeserves our attention and support. In accordance with the
\nprinciples and procedures of the law, let the military tribunal
\ntake over the investigation, conduct the trial and afterwards
\npronounce its verdict in the case.<\/p>\n
We appreciate the quick action taken by the Wirabuana military
\nleadership. By putting 12 of its members on trial the regional
\nmilitary command has proved it is not covering up the facts.<\/p>\n
The inquiry made by the National Commission on Human rights
\nhas had a share in the developments. Possibly, too, the spreading
\ndisplays of solidarity among students with the Ujungpandang
\nincident has been a consideration. Still, the commander's
\ndecision was taken independently after investigations
\nby a military fact finding team.<\/p>\n
It is this quick and correct action which we applaud. Aside
\nfrom showing that it is being honest about the facts, this case
\nalso shows that the regional military leadership is responsive
\ntowards the public's aspirations.<\/p>\n
