Imron set to give firing squad the slip<\/p>\n

Remorseful Bali bomb defendant Ali Imron alias Alik is facing a
\n20-year jail sentence despite the prosecution's recognition that
\nhis role was as pivotal as those of the other defendants involved
\nin the murder of 202 innocent people last October.<\/p>\n
In its sentence request read out before the Bali District
\nCourt on Wednesday, the prosecution said the defendant had been
\nproven guilty of planning the bomb attacks that ripped through
\ntwo nightclubs in the famous Bali tourist resort of Kuta.<\/p>\n
They said Imron's cooperation during the trial, however, was a
\nmitigating factor and merited a more lenient punishment for the
\ndefendant.<\/p>\n
"Considering this, Ali Imron must be punished with a maximum
\nof 20 years in jail," prosecutor I Gusti Putu Sulaba told the
\ncourt.<\/p>\n
The court sentenced one of the suspects, Amrozi, to death last
\nmonth and prosecutors have also demanded death for two other
\nsuspects, Abdul Aziz alias Imam Samudra, and Ali Gufron alias
\nMukhlas. The court will hand down its verdict in Samudra's case
\nnext week.<\/p>\n
Clad in a neat black suit, Imron sat quietly during the two-
\nand-a-half-hour court session. He was often seen weeping and
\ntrying to hide his tears.<\/p>\n
Bali Prosecutor's Office chief M. Salim said Imron should
\nreceive 20 years under Article 14 of Law No. 15\/2003 on
\nterrorism.<\/p>\n
"Under this law, it is fitting that we request 20 years
\nimprisonment for the defendant, especially given that the
\ndefendant was cooperative in revealing his illegal activities,"
\nthe prosecutor said.<\/p>\n
Salim said Imron had been honest in coming clean about his
\ninvolvement in the bomb attacks.<\/p>\n
Imron had also expressed remorse to the families of the
\nvictims, Salim added.<\/p>\n
"Imron has urged people not to follow in his footsteps," Salim
\nsaid, adding that the defendant had shown respect to the court
\nand comported himself well compared to the other defendants.<\/p>\n
Amrozi and other witnesses had testified against Imron.<\/p>\n
Imron and his lawyer Suyanto will present their defense
\narguments on Sept. 15.<\/p>\n
In a related trial in Surabaya, defense lawyers for Usman
\ndemanded that the court acquit him of all charges, saying the
\ncourt did not have jurisdiction to hear the case.<\/p>\n
Usman is charged with concealing weapons and ammunition
\nbelieved to belong to the al-Qaeda-linked Jamaah Islamiyah terror
\ngroup.<\/p>\n
In their arguments, defense lawyers Fahmi A. Bachmid and
\nZamroni said the events to which the charges related took place
\nin the East Java town of Pasuruan, which was outside the
\njurisdiction of the Surabaya District Court.<\/p>\n
They also said their client had not been accompanied by a
\nlawyer during his preliminary questioning, which was a violation
\nof the Criminal Law Procedures Code.<\/p>\n
The trial of another defendant, Yudi Lukito Kurniawan, was
\npostponed for unclear reasons.<\/p>",
