        "content": "<p>Improving workers&apos; skills important: GE executive<\/p>\n<p>SURABAYA (JP): PT GE Lighting Indonesia, a lighting producer<br>\nowned by the U.S. General Electric, believes improving workers&apos;<br>\nskills and welfare is one of the most important strategies in<br>\nraising its market share in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Company president, Paul Morse, said here yesterday that a<br>\ncompany was required not just to operate modern equipment and<br>\nfacilities but also to improve its employees skills to boost<br>\nsales.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&apos;s GE&apos;s responsibility to take an active role in developing<br>\nits employees skills to meet the growing demand for advanced<br>\nskills in Indonesia.  Adding value to the nation through<br>\nmanagement training and employee development are key parts of<br>\nGE&apos;s strategy,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said there were only two expatriates out of the about 2,000<br>\nemployees at GE Lighting Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>He said his company gave Indonesian employees advanced<br>\ntraining related to production and technology.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;GE&apos;s commitment to human resources development is a win-win<br>\nsituation for Indonesia and GE. The immediate result will be<br>\nsuperior quality and service from GE Lighting Indonesia at<br>\ncompetitive prices,&quot; Morse said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;However, more importantly, we are investing in the<br>\ndevelopment of Indonesia&apos;s human resources base. Indonesia is a<br>\ndynamic country and GE is confident of the nation&apos;s future.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Morse said GE Lighting Indonesia made neons and light bulbs.<br>\nIt has an annual capacity of 180 million units from its three<br>\nmanufacturing facilities in Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>He said the annual capacity figure was for 30 percent bulbs<br>\nand 70 percent neons.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We export some 40 percent to Asian nations including<br>\nThailand, Taiwan, the Philippines, Korea, the Middle East and<br>\nAfrica,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said Indonesia&apos;s market was very strong.<\/p>\n<p>GE Lighting Indonesia competes with Philips which currently<br>\nleads the market.<\/p>\n<p>Product engineer of GE Lighting Indonesia, Ahmad Gozali, said<br>\nGE neons&apos; lifespan ranged between 7,000 hours and 10,000 hours<br>\nand the bulbs&apos; lifespan reached 1,000 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Morse said GE Lighting Indonesia still had to buy glass<br>\nmaterials from Philips and a Thai firm. &quot;We are still working out<br>\nwhether we can make the glass ourselves.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>GE holds a number of joint venture firms in Indonesia,<br>\nincluding PT General Electric Teknologi Indonesia, PT GE Astra<br>\nFinance, PT GE Nusantara Turbine Services, PT Paiton Energy<br>\nCompany and PT GE Lokomotif Indonesia.
