Improve public service: Soeharto<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto asked public service agencies
\nto jointly publish a guide book detailing their activities.<\/p>\n
He said the book would help improve the quality of relations
\nbetween the government and the people because it would explain
\nthe services available to them.<\/p>\n
"Actually, people don't know much about the capacity and
\nquality of our public services," Soeharto said before conferring
\nthe Abdisatyabakti award to 140 public service offices at the
\nState Palace.<\/p>\n
Accompanied by State Minister of Administrative Reforms T.B.
\nSilalahi, Soeharto also reminded civil servants of their duty to
\nserve the people rather than be served.<\/p>\n
"We must continue improving our services to anticipate
\npeople's rising demands," he said.<\/p>\n
Analysts have said that the public service sector remains a
\nweak point for the government as people are often forced to bribe
\nofficials for their service.<\/p>\n
"State agencies should be able to communicate with the people
\non their needs and ensure they are being given the best service,"
\nSoeharto said.<\/p>\n
The recipients of the award include West Jakarta District
\nCourt, Yohannes general hospital in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara,
\nand the government-run water enterprise Tirta Uli in Pematang
\nSiantar, North Sumatra.<\/p>\n
Minister Silalahi said the award is presented annually in an
\neffort to improve the public services sector.<\/p>\n
"This award hopes to encourage state-run offices to improve
