Improve education, orders President<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto warned yesterday Indonesia's
\nall-out effort to catch up with industrialized countries will
\nflop unless the country develops quality education.<\/p>\n
The President said that although Indonesia has made remarkable
\nprogress in education over the past three decades, the sector is
\nyet to pass the stumbling blocks.<\/p>\n
\"The world will regard us Indonesians only if we have
\nprofessional skills and master science and technology,\" he said
\nwhen opening the annual workshop of the Ministry of Education and
\nCulture.<\/p>\n
Soeharto warned that in this era of increasing liberal
\neconomy, Indonesia's readiness to enter the global competition
\nwill be dictated by its ability to bolster productivity.<\/p>\n
\"We will have to take the challenge by sustaining the
\ndevelopment of education and culture,\" the President said.<\/p>\n
On hand were Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Azwar
\nAnas, Minister of Education and Culture Wardiman Djojonegoro,
\nMinister of Home Affairs Moch. Yogie S.M. and Minister of Women's
\nRoles Mien Sugandi.<\/p>\n
In the past, Indonesian education focused on equal education
\nopportunities. However, now that most Indonesians are literate
\nthe time has come for Indonesia to emphasize quality, Soeharto
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The Soeharto administration's achievement in developing
\neducation has won international recognition.<\/p>\n
The workshop began on Sunday and will close today in the rainy
\ntown of Bogor, 60 kilometers south of here. The 386 officials
\ntaking part in the meeting discussed the education and culture
\nministry's 1996\/1997 working programs. (pan)<\/p>",
