Impotency and frigidity 'not all psychological'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Sexual dysfunction is no longer only the domain
\nof psychiatrists or gynecologists, since the problem may well be
\ncured through a urological approach too, a urologist said here on
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the Indonesian Urological Association (IAUI) Rainy
\nUmbas disclosed that besides psychological barriers, both men and
\nwomen might lose their sexual desire because of urinary-related
\ndiseases.<\/p>\n
Umbas told a media conference that in many cases male sexual
\ndysfunction, especially that related to impotence, could be cured
\nwith the help of urologists, who knew pretty well that such
\nimpotence was caused by infection of the ureter, kidney stone or
\nkidney problems.<\/p>\n
He said that only one-third of male erectile dysfunction cases
\nin Indonesia, which started to be handled by urologists five
\nyears ago, were caused by psychological problems.<\/p>\n
\"Seventy percent of male impotency can be cured via a
\nmedicinal approach,\" Umbas said.<\/p>\n
The urologists here have broadened their services on urology,
\nwhich now include dealing with male aging, andropause and sexual
\ndysfunction.<\/p>\n
They plan to hold the 8th International Meeting of the
\nFederation of Asean Urological Associations (FAUA) in Bali from
\nAug. 29, 2001 to Sept. 1 to publicize their achievements in
\nurological treatment and to forge links and cooperation with
\nother specialists.<\/p>\n
The international meeting will start with a course on female
\nsexual dysfunction, a novel subject for the medical profession,
\nwhich came into the open only last year.<\/p>\n
Umbas, who is also the chairman of the international meeting's
\norganizing committee, said that they were still \"in the dark\"
\nabout both the cause and the approach to treatment for female
\nsexual dysfunction, with frigidity as one of the syndromes.<\/p>\n
There had yet be certainty as to which type of specialists
\nwere capable of handling female sexual dysfunction, whether it
\nwas internists or gynecologists, he said.<\/p>\n
A urological clinic in the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Umbas
\nsaid, had taken the initiative to find out more about female
\nsexual dysfunction by handing out questionnaires to women in the
\n20 to 50 age range. The questions were mostly about their sexual
\nactivities.<\/p>\n
Most of them who experienced sexual dysfunction were reluctant
\nto acknowledge their real condition, he said, adding that from
\nthe survey the urologists could see that the major cause had
\nsomething to do with psychological problems, but they were not
\nsure yet.<\/p>\n
Urologist Djoko Rahardjo said that his colleague Akmal Taher
\nhad also conducted a similar survey, with an initial conclusion
\nthat frigidity in women had something to do with diabetes
\nmellitus disease and a high level of cholesterol.<\/p>\n
\"These diseases hinder the flow of blood to the clitoris,\" he
