Imposing export tax on paper not essential: Mar'ie<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Finance Mar'ie Muhammad hinted
\nyesterday that he would not introduce a tax instrument to curb
\nexports of paper in spite of the current shortage of supply.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a hearing with the Finance and Trade Commission of
\nthe House of Representatives, Mar'ie said that Indonesian paper
\nproducers could lose their markets if they are required to pay
\nexport taxes.<\/p>\n
\"It is not an easy job to get back the market, which has been
\nfilled by exporters from other countries,\" he said in his
\nresponse to House members' question over the possibility of
\nimposing a tax on paper exports.<\/p>\n
House members said that the introduction of an export tax
\nwould be an effective solution in dealing with the paper shortage
\nin Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The minister said that the government's macro policy is to
\ngradually reduce all tariff and non-tariff barriers in order to
\ngive fair treatments to all business players.<\/p>\n
He acknowledged that the government still imposed taxes on
\nexports of a number of commodities, such as crude palm oil, to
\nprotect local cooking oil producers and consumers.<\/p>\n
\"Such a tax measure is, however, only temporary and is imposed
\nonly on an emergency situation,\" he said of the reason why there
\nis an inconsistency in the government's export tax policy.<\/p>\n
Mar'ie said that the government also gives similar taxation
\ntreatment to imports and is committed that it will not introduce
\na new import tax in the future.<\/p>\n
\"However, if there is evidence that other countries carry out
\na dumping practice towards Indonesia, such a tax measure is a
\nmust to protect the country's economy,\" he said of the
\npossibility of imposing import taxes on certain commodities.<\/p>\n
He explained that the gradual reduction of tariff barriers is
\nnot only essential in following the trends of trade globalization
\nbut is also important in minimizing the monopolistic practices of
\nsome business groups.(hen)<\/p>",
