Imports inspection will be maintained<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Trade Minister S.B. Joedono said yesterday that
\nthe present pre-shipment inspection system for imports, which has
\nbeen used since 1985, would be maintained.<\/p>\n
\"But I don't know whether the contract with the Geneva-based
\nSociete Generale de Surveillance (SGS) for the implementation of
\nthe system will be extended or not,\" Joedono said. The SGS
\ncontract expires in July.<\/p>\n
The future of the SGS contract would, he said, be decided by
\nthe minister of finance.<\/p>\n
The imports inspection service is currently provided by PT
\nSurveyor Indonesia, a company controlled by the government, in
\ncooperation with SGS as a sub-contractor.<\/p>\n
In a related development, Amirudin Saud, Chairman of the
\nIndonesian Importers Association, told the House of
\nRepresentatives yesterday that the pre-shipment inspection system
\nfor imports should be maintained for its great success over the
\npast 10 years to facilitate smooth import flows.<\/p>\n
\"The restoration of the post-shipment inspection system will
\nagain increase direct contacts between importers and customs
\nofficials and such direct contacts could become the starting
\npoints for corruption or other forms of malfeasance.<\/p>\n
Amirudin said if the bill on customs and excise tax is really
\ndesigned to facilitate foreign trade, the regulation on the pre-
\nshipment inspection system should be clearly stipulated in the
\nnew legislation.<\/p>\n
He earlier pointed out that importers have been so satisfied
\nwith the present system that they are willing to bear part of the
\ncosts of the pre-shipment inspection service.<\/p>\n
Amirudin added most businessmen are worried that the costs of
\nimporting will again increase sharply if imports are inspected on
\narrival at Indonesian ports. (vin)<\/p>",
