REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON \u2014 US President Donald Trump claims to\nhave spoken with one of what he calls an \u2018important person\u2019 in Iran to\ndelay an attack on the country\u2019s energy infrastructure and power plants.\nTrump says this important person in Tehran offered talks via phone to\ndissuade the US from proceeding with the ongoing escalation of war.<\/p>\n
However, Trump refused to name the important person in Iran he was\nreferring to. \u201cThey (Iran) are getting better PR. We have had very\nserious talks. Witkoff and Kushner (Trump\u2019s trusted aides) handled those\ntalks. Everything is going perfectly,\u201d Trump said, as quoted from FOX\nNews on Monday (23\/3\/2026). Trump\u2019s statement to FOX News was in\nresponse to Iran\u2019s official denial that there have been no talks or\ndialogue with the US.<\/p>\n
Trump declined to reveal who the important person in Iran involved in\nthe talks was. Trump said he did not want that important person in Iran\nto be killed for engaging in talks with Washington.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey spoke with an important person in Iran, but they do not want\nthat person to be killed,\u201d Trump stated. He said the talks with the\nimportant person in Iran would continue for the next five days.<\/p>\n
Trump hopes that the talks with the important person in Iran will\nlead to a positive way forward. Because if not, Trump said the threat to\ndestroy Iran\u2019s power plants and energy facilities would still proceed as\nscheduled.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will have talks for five days. We will see how it turns out. If\nit goes smoothly, we will resolve this issue. If not, we will just\ncontinue to bomb relentlessly,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
Trump rejected the notion that he was withdrawing the threats he had\nalready issued against Iran on Sunday (22\/3\/2026). Trump said the\nthreats should still stand until the deadline on Tuesday\n(24\/3\/2024).<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, Trump said the important person from Iran contacted him\nto discuss practical matters that could nullify the US threats.\n\u201cTomorrow morning (24\/3\/2026), we hope we would be able to blow up their\nlargest power plant, which would cost more than 10 billion dollars to\nrebuild,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
In fact, the plan to carry out his threat had initially been prepared\nwith a single shot. \u201cOne shot, destroyed, collapsed,\u201d Trump said. But\nTrump said the important person in Iran made direct contact to negotiate\nthe threat. \u201cWhy would they want that? So they called. It wasn\u2019t me who\ncalled.
