        "content": "<p>Implication of monetary crisis<\/p>\n<p>From Merdeka<\/p>\n<p>The drawn out monetary crisis has grown into a national<br>\nmulticrisis. Almost everyday I read the opinions and analyses of<br>\nso-called experts in economic, legal and political fields.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, the statements made by the experts, some widely<br>\nknown, others relatively unknown, benefit the public in general<br>\nbecause the knowledge displayed is interesting and constitutes a<br>\nkind of free course in various disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>Why do I say \"interesting\"? Because the public gets to hear a<br>\ngreat number of experts. The most interesting report so far has<br>\nbeen in the economic field (Merdeka, April 15). A front page<br>\nheadline stated Hartojo wants debate with Kwik Kian Gie.<\/p>\n<p>This is most interesting for the following reasons: First,<br>\nbecause both gentlemen are graduates of foreign universities,<br>\nwhere Pancasila democracy and economy is not taught. Second,<br>\nbecause Hartojo was reported by the media in November 1996 as<br>\nhaving stated a \"new figure in budget leaks\" (US$40 billion in 30<br>\nyears). To my knowledge, his statement has never been denied,<br>\nconfirmed or investigated by the relevant agencies. Third,<br>\nbecause Kwik Kian Gie has written many of his thoughts and<br>\nanalyses in the media.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, if the debate desired by Hartojo takes place and is<br>\nreported by the media, it will be shown which of the two can be<br>\nqualified as \"the champion of Pancasila economic development\".<\/p>\n<p>Economic development during the past three decades has clearly<br>\nestablished Indonesia as a \"capitalistic\", even an \"antiquated<br>\ncapitalistic\" country. It has been proclaimed as \"very<br>\nsuccessful\" by the country's highest institutions, intellectuals<br>\nin general and experts in economic, legal and political fields in<br>\nparticular. They are now under fire of demands voiced by all<br>\nlayers in society.<\/p>\n<p>Let us hope our nation will enjoy a time as meant by the pope<br>\nin his Easter message recently: \"To be in power means to serve.\"<br>\nIt will certainly give peace to society and accelerate the<br>\nrestoration process of confidence (not anxiety) of the people<br>\ntoward the government, which has been intonating it of late.<\/p>\n<p>ALPHONSUS P.
