Immoral activities?<\/p>\n
\"Councillors of Muslim-based parties (PPP, PAN and PK)
\ndemanded the Jakarta administration close nightspots during
\nRamadhan. In their opinion, if the nightspots remain open it will
\nonly disturb Muslims' solemnity in performing their Ramadhan
\nprayers. PAN councillors want to close nightspots for good
\nbecause all of those activities are immoral.\" (The Jakarta Post,
\nNov. 8, 2000)<\/p>\n
Activities in nightspots usually take place in closed rooms
\nwithout any sound emanating to disturb the residents in the
\nsurrounding areas, especially those nightspots located in
\nnonresidential areas. It is not right therefore to say that
\nnightspots will disturb the solemnity of Ramadhan prayers.<\/p>\n
The activities in a discotheque, for example, will be
\nentertainment in the form of music, dancing, dining and drinking
\nin the accompaniment of escort girls and\/or disc jockeys. Nothing
\nmore. Are these activities immoral?<\/p>\n
What moral standard do councillors of PAN use to say that the
\nactivities of nightspots are immoral? Do they think that Islamic
\nfigures the caliber of the late Subchan ZE, who did a lot in the
\nextermination of the Indonesian Communist Party, are immoral? The
\nmoral standard that PAN applies is the Fiqh law, which, according
\nto Dr. Nurcholish Madjid, is now fossilized and worth using as
\ndecoration only. (Post, Aug. 21, 2000).<\/p>\n
It is true that at nightspots there are some people using
\necstasy or picking up prostitutes for the night. These actions,
\nhowever, are simply excesses. Even in Islamic schools with
\ndormitories, I have seen with my own eyes such excesses as sodomy
\nand adultery.<\/p>\n
If they fully believe that Islam is rahmatan lil'alamin (a
\nblessing for the universe), they should honor the freedom of
\npeople professing another religion, those having different
\nbeliefs and even infidels. Man is destined to be varied and does
\nnot need uniformity. What a boring place this world would be if
\nall creatures were uniform.<\/p>\n
