Immigration denies banning Megawati<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Director General of Immigration Pranowo denied
\nreports yesterday that his office had banned the ousted leader of
\nthe Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI), Megawati Soekarnoputri,
\nfrom traveling abroad.<\/p>\n
\"It's not true. Megawati is not on the blacklist and she is
\nfree to go wherever she wants,\" Pranowo said.<\/p>\n
Megawati was reportedly stopped by immigration officials
\nSaturday morning at Soekarno-Hatta international airport while
\ntrying to board a Garuda Airways flight to Singapore.<\/p>\n
She subsequently demanded that the immigration officials
\nprovide written proof that she was not allowed to leave the
\ncountry. They failed to do so and she boarded the plane.<\/p>\n
The blacklist contains the names of nearly 700 Indonesians who
\nare prohibited from leaving the country for criminal or political
\nreasons, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
Megawati has been summoned for questioning three times in the
\nlast fortnight regarding the events surrounding the riots that
\nwere triggered by the takeover of the PDI headquarters on July
\n27.<\/p>\n
Pranowo maintained that Megawati's departure was proof that
\nshe was not on the blacklist.<\/p>\n
\"They left for Singapore on Garuda flight number GA 938 at
\neight in the morning through terminal E,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said that if she was stopped for a few minutes for
\nquestioning by immigration officials it was merely a routine
