The Branch\nLeadership of the Muhammadiyah Student Association (PC IMM) in Sumenep,\nalong with cross-campus BEM alliances, emphasised that the arrest of\nfield perpetrators from rogue TNI members is merely the initial\nstep.<\/p>\n
In a public discussion and declaration titled \u2018Solidarity for Andrie\nYunus: Alarm on the Death of Democracy, Condemn Barbaric Terror and\nIntimidation Against Human Rights Activists\u2019, held at the Muhammadiyah\nDakwah Building in Sumenep on Wednesday (18\/3), the activists demanded a\ncomplete investigation down to the intellectual roots.<\/p>\n
General Chairman of PC IMM Sumenep Regency, Moh Ridho Ilahi Robbi,\nassessed the physical attack on Andrie Yunus not as ordinary\ncriminality, but as a form of structural terror to create mass fear\n(chilling effect).<\/p>\n
\u201cWe strongly condemn this barbaric act. Andrie Yunus was attacked not\nfor any crime he committed, but for the courage he showed as a human\nrights defender. The acid splashing on Andrie is a real threat to our\ndemocracy, and remaining silent in the face of this is betrayal,\u201d Ridho\nasserted.<\/p>\n
Threat to Civil Space<\/p>\n
Ridho highlighted the worrying phenomenon of democratic backsliding\nincreasingly concerning throughout 2025\u20132026. Data from Amnesty\nInternational Indonesia records at least 104 human rights defenders as\nvictims of attacks in the first half of 2025.<\/p>\n
For IMM, the pattern of violence targeting activists and media\nindicates that civil space in Indonesia is in a state of emergency.\nRidho reminded that law enforcement should not get trapped in the old\nscenario of only touching the executors.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Andrie Yunus tragedy is the latest link in a chain of repeated\nviolence patterns, from the Novel Baswedan case (former KPK\ninvestigator) to terror packages of corpses at national media offices.\nWe see a pattern where the state often only touches the field actors,\nwhile the main masterminds remain free to breathe outside air,\u201d he\nadded.<\/p>\n
TNI Military Police Centre Transparency<\/p>\n
On the other hand, the TNI Military Police Centre (Puspom) moved\nquickly by detaining four TNI members serving in the Headquarters\nDetachment of the Strategic Intelligence Agency (Denma BAIS) TNI. The\nfour suspects with initials NDP, SL, BWH, and ES are now languishing in\nthe Pomdam Jaya Detention Centre with super maximum security status.<\/p>\n
The TNI Puspom Commander, Major General Yusri Nuryanto, assured that\nthe case handling is being carried out professionally and\ntransparently.<\/p>\n
\u201cPuspom TNI will work professionally, and then transparently, so that\nin those stages we will still invite the media,\u201d Yusri stated at TNI\nHeadquarters, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
While appreciating the TNI Puspom\u2019s steps, IMM Sumenep provided\ncritical notes. They urged collaboration between TNI Puspom, National\nPolice, and the National Human Rights Commission to uncover who gave the\norders behind the action.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe appreciate the quick steps of TNI Puspom in securing the\nsuspects. However, this is only the first act. The real question that\nhas not been answered is: who ordered it? As long as the intellectual\nbrain behind this attack has not stood at the court table, true justice\nis still far from reality,\u201d Ridho concluded.<\/p>\n
Currently, the four TNI personnel are threatened with Article 467 of\nthe Criminal Code, with a maximum penalty of 7 years in prison. TNI\nPuspom promises to periodically report developments on motives and\nautopsy results to the public.<\/p>\n
As many as 86 CCTV recordings have been collected and presented in\nthe investigation process. All those recordings are now being analysed\nto uncover the incident comprehensively.<\/p>\n
