Reading a news story about President Megawati declaring Imlek
\nor the Lunar New Year a national holiday, I am of the opinion
\nthat this judgment should be welcomed. At least it indicates that
\nthere is no more discrimination against the ethnic Chinese in the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
Understandably, Chinese attributes and rituals were forbidden
\nfor years. Perhaps the people of Chinese descent can only
\ndominate the business sector, something in which other ethnic
\ngroups find it hard to compete.<\/p>\n
In reality Chinese-Indonesians have been successful for years
\nin several aspects of the country's life such as music, cinema,
\netc. This means the process of recognition has occurred
\nnaturally.<\/p>\n
What is important now is that Chinese-Indonesians should not
\nstress too much stress their ethnic Chinese attributes and
\nrituals amid their excitement, a culture that refers back to
\ntheir Chinese ancestors. As popular figure of assimilation Junus
\nJahja has said, they will revive a lifestyle that is in line with
\nthe Indonesian way of life simply because they are part of
\nIndonesia, not the People's Republic of China.<\/p>\n
