Imam skips responsibility<\/p>\n
SURABAYA: East Java Governor Imam Utomo should not be the
\nsubject of blame if companies have forcibly laid off some of
\ntheir workers due to the increase of the minimum wage in the
\nprovince, says a local official.<\/p>\n
\"The setting of the minimum wage in the province's regencies
\nand mayoralties were conducted by the regents and mayors and the
\nprovincial administration was not involved. The governor has
\nplayed his own role only to formalize all things which have been
\ndetermined by the regents and mayors,\" Indra Wiragana, chief of
\nthe legal affairs unit at the provincial administration,
\nexplained here on Friday.<\/p>\n
Indra was responding to the Chairman of the local chapter of
\nthe Indonesian Employers Association, W. Pattiradjawane's, recent
\nstatement that the governor should held responsible for the
\nwidespread layoffs that are planned at two footwear factories in
\nSidoarjo and Surabaya because the two companies were no longer
\nable to pay their employees because of the increase in the
\nminimum wage.<\/p>\n
The governor issued a decree on the increase in the minimum
\nwage in Surabaya and Sidoarjo regencies to Rp 453,200 from the
\ncurrent Rp 390,000.<\/p>\n
