I'm serious with plan to quit: Amien<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Amien
\nRais said on Wednesday that he was serious about his plan to
\nresign as chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN), saying
\nthat a public official could not boost his or her productivity if
\nhe or she held several positions.<\/p>\n
\"I am serious about my plan (to quit as party chairman),\"
\nAmien told reporters on Wednesday, admitting that the move would
\nspark controversy among party members.<\/p>\n
Not only the President, Vice President and ministers, but also
\nthe respective heads of the House of Representatives (DPR) and
\nthe MPR should concentrate on one position, Amien said.<\/p>\n
He said he would discuss his plan to quit with party leaders
\nnext week.<\/p>\n
Public pressure has mounted for party leaders holding public
\noffice to give up their posts in respective parties to avoid a
\nconflict of interest.<\/p>\n
Party leaders that hold double positions include President
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri, who is also chairwoman of the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party of Struggle; Vice President Hamzah Haz, also
\nchairman of the Muslim-based United Development Party; justice
\nand human rights minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra, also chairman of
\nthe Crescent Star Party; MPR Speaker Amien Rais, who is also
\nchairman of PAN; and DPR Speaker Akbar Tandjung, who is also
