'I'm satisfied with busway services'<\/p>\n
The busway project stretching from Blok M in South Jakarta to
\nKota in West Jakarta celebrated its first anniversary on Jan. 15.
\nThe Jakarta Post talked to some residents whether they enjoy
\nservices provided by busway buses.<\/p>\n
Magdalene Ella Ubaidi, 25, an entrepreneur who owns a boutique
\nin Kota, West Jakarta. She resides with her family on Jl.
\nTirtayasa, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
I enjoy services provided by the busway buses. I often use
\nbusway buses to reach my work place as it's convenient, cheap and
\nsecure.<\/p>\n
But, I find it difficult to reach the nearest busway shelter
\nfrom my home. Only few feeder buses are operational and I can not
\nrely on them.<\/p>\n
I also observe that the management of the busway has failed to
\nprovide supporting facilities for passengers who want to continue
\ntheir trips. For example, in some locations in Kota, the absence
\nof necessary pedestrian bridges, zebra crossings and traffic
\nlights that would help pedestrians cross the road safely has
\nended up with repeated traffic accidents.<\/p>\n
Heru, 35, works in an advertising company in Pulogadung
\nindustrial estate in East Jakarta. He resides with his family in
\nPondok Kopi, also in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"For the Jakarta administration and bus passengers who now
\nenjoy better services of the busway, the project is simply a
\nsuccess story. But, please, keep in mind that the success is at
\nthe expense of other road users. The traffic along the corridor
\nhas worsened since the busway takes up two lanes previously
\ndesigned for private cars.<\/p>\n
People have complained that chronic traffic jams as a result
\nof the operation of busway. But, I myself have not been affected
\nby the first corridor.<\/p>\n
What I am afraid of is the administration's plan to build the
\nsecond and third corridors. The plan will definitely affect me. I
\ncould not imagine how chronic traffic congestion would be should
\nthe new busway projects begin their operation.<\/p>\n
Wahyudi, 29, a resident of Kebayoran Lama Utara subdistrict
\nin South Jakarta, who works for a private company on Jl. Gajah
\nMada, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
I rely on busway buses for my daily transportation to the
\noffice. I take a busway bus from Blok M and it is much faster
\ncompared to a regular bus. My suggestion is the city
\nadministration will prioritize busway passengers.<\/p>\n
The absence of a feeder service is the only weakness of the
\nbusway corridor. It takes me nearly one hour from my house to
\nBlok M, much longer than the trip from Blok M to my office,
\nwhich is only 30 minutes.<\/p>\n
If there is a feeder facility, it will be very helpful for
\npeople who are quite far from the busway service.<\/p>\n
I also agree that the city administration develop more busway
\ncorridors. It will help smoothen trips for commuters like me.<\/p>",
