ILO addresses abuse of RI's workers<\/p>\n

The International Labor Organization (ILO) launched a report on
\nWednesday, which for the first time presents comprehensive global
\nand regional data on forced labor and call for a global alliance
\nto eliminate the practice.<\/p>\n
Lotte Kecser, chief technical advisor of ILO Jakarta, said
\nhere on Tuesday that the report was part of the global movement
\nagainst forced labor that was designed as a follow up to the
\nDeclaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights in the Work
\nPlace.<\/p>\n
\"The 87-page report will contain results of comprehensive and
\ndetailed analysis of forced labor. The studies present a
\npreliminary assessment of forced labor, numbers of forced
\nlaborers, the number of victims of human trafficking and
\nfinancial advantages of employing traded workers,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Lotte asserted that the report was relevant for Indonesia
\nbecause a part of it was based on case studies in Indonesia and
\non Indonesian migrant workers employed in Singapore.<\/p>\n
She said the elimination of forced labor in Indonesia faced
\nchallenges because of unsettled core problems such as poverty and
\nbackwardness.<\/p>\n
\"Millions of people in Indonesia have been trapped into forced
\nlabor because they face serious economic problems. They are
\nforced to work and are physically abused during their employment
\nbecause they are not educated, are not skilled and are lacking
\ninformation.<\/p>\n
\"Minimum standards that should be set by a global alliance are
\nbadly needed to provide protection for domestic workers and
\nimmigrants employed overseas,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Former President Abdurrahman \"Gus Dur\" Wahid concurred and
\nsaid the employment of domestic workers in Indonesia was a form
\nof slavery, which is against the amended 1945 Constitution and
\nagainst human rights.<\/p>\n
\"Most domestic workers employed in families have always been
\nemployed more than the recommended eight hours per day and even
\nuntil late at night. They have no day off and their salaries are
\noften withheld until the Idul Fitri holidays at which time they
\nare allowed to return home. They are not insured and do not
\nreceive health care when they are sick either,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said the worst negative impact of forced labor was the fact
\nthat many domestic workers fell victim to abuse and rape by their
\nemployers.<\/p>\n
Lack of skills and language constraints have been blamed for
\nthe widespread incidence of abuse against Indonesian workers
\nemployed overseas.<\/p>",
