        "content": "<p>Illegal workers fleeing Malaysia<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (Reuter): Illegal immigrants who came to Malaysia<br>\nto work are fleeing the country ahead of a Dec. 31 deadline for<br>\ndeportation of those without entry permits, newspapers yesterday<br>\nquoted police and officials as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Police have also stepped up patrols near Kuala Lumpur<br>\nembassies to prevent the immigrants from going there to seek<br>\npolitical asylum to avoid being sent home, the New Sunday Times<br>\nnewspaper said.<\/p>\n<p>It quoted Perlis state immigration director Raja Yahya Aziz as<br>\nsaying 15 Myanmar workers and five Bangladeshis were caught while<br>\ntrying to cross into Thailand. Perlis state is next to southern<br>\nThailand.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said in October that there<br>\nwere 750,000 foreign workers in the country with work permits and<br>\na million more who worked illegally. Malaysia's booming economy<br>\nhas created acute labor shortages and provided a magnet for<br>\nforeign workers.<\/p>",
