Illegal weapons seized in 'Sapu jagat' operation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police have confiscated 16 firearms, 25 sharp
\nweapons and 355 rounds of ammunition during two searches, code-
\nnamed Sapu Jagat and Brantas Jaya 2001, that were conducted over
\nthe past two days, an officer said on Monday.<\/p>\n
City police chief Insp. Gen. Sofjan Jacoeb told a media
\nbriefing that the seizures were made during separate searches
\nconducted in South Jakarta, Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, North
\nJakarta, Bekasi and Depok.<\/p>\n
"The sapu jagat operation proved that prohibited firearms are
\nscattered throughout Jakarta. We are following leads to find out
\nwho are the suppliers of the weapons," Sofjan said.<\/p>\n
The police said the raids were carried out on motorists and in
\nprivate homes after receiving information from the public about
\nthe possibility of firearms in the area.<\/p>\n
Seven people were named suspects for the possession of
\nprohibited firearms, the two-star general said.<\/p>\n
Of the suspects, one was identified as 33-year-old Chief Pvt.
\nHeri Purnama. The former member of the Bandung-based Army
\nStrategic Reserves Command (Kostrad) was arrested for possession
\nof a Smith and Wesson pistol with live ammunition in West
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Heri has been allegedly absent from the army for three years
\nand is being held at West Jakarta Police station for questioning.<\/p>\n
Another suspect, 42-year-old businessman Wibijanto, was
\narrested following a raid at the latter's residence in Kelapa
\nGading, North Jakarta, during which police seized an automatic
\nScorpion rifle, a revolver, a Remington gun and 50 rounds of
\nammunition.<\/p>\n
Police said during the raid that Wibijanto failed to show a
\nlicense for his collection of weapons.<\/p>\n
Police seized an FNC rifle from suspect Ronover Arvian
\nPardede, alias Coky, a resident of Jl. Mesjid, Bendungan Hilir,
\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n
"To develop our ongoing operation, we have coordinated with
\nthe customs and excise office and the port and airport
\nauthorities in a bid to prevent the illegal entry of imported
\nweapons into Jakarta," Sofjan said.<\/p>\n
During the Brantas Jaya operation, police arrested 26 suspects
\nfor offenses committed on public transportation and confiscated
\nsix homemade guns and 25 sharp weapons.<\/p>\n
"The suspects were mostly caught in the act, and four of them
\nwere shot for resisting arrest," Sofjan said.<\/p>\n
In addition to the two operations, police also launched a raid
\nto enforce traffic regulations, code-named Zebra Jaya 2001.<\/p>\n
The traffic operation was carried out in traffic congested
\nareas, such as Jl. Gatot Subroto in South Jakarta, Jl. Sudirman
\nin South Jakarta, Jl. Kramat Raya in Central Jakarta, Jl.
\nMargonda Raya in Depok and Jl. Letjen S. Parman in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Sofjan said that 812 people were given tickets over the past
\ntwo days.<\/p>\n
Four hundred and twelve motorcyclists were ticketed for not
\nwearing helmets, 320 people for not carrying complete vehicle
\nregistration and 72 others for violating traffic signs.<\/p>\n
"We will continue our operations and we apologize if they
\ncause any inconvenience to motorists or motorcyclists, but this
\nis in everyone's best interest," Sofjan said. (emf)<\/p>",
