        "content": "<p>Illegal weapons seized in &apos;Sapu jagat&apos; operation<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Police have confiscated 16 firearms, 25 sharp<br>\nweapons and 355 rounds of ammunition during two searches, code-<br>\nnamed Sapu Jagat and Brantas Jaya 2001, that were conducted over<br>\nthe past two days, an officer said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>City police chief Insp. Gen. Sofjan Jacoeb told a media<br>\nbriefing that the seizures were made during separate searches<br>\nconducted in South Jakarta, Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, North<br>\nJakarta, Bekasi and Depok.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The sapu jagat operation proved that prohibited firearms are<br>\nscattered throughout Jakarta. We are following leads to find out<br>\nwho are the suppliers of the weapons,&quot; Sofjan said.<\/p>\n<p>The police said the raids were carried out on motorists and in<br>\nprivate homes after receiving information from the public about<br>\nthe possibility of firearms in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Seven people were named suspects for the possession of<br>\nprohibited firearms, the two-star general said.<\/p>\n<p>Of the suspects, one was identified as 33-year-old Chief Pvt.<br>\nHeri Purnama. The former member of the Bandung-based Army<br>\nStrategic Reserves Command (Kostrad) was arrested for possession<br>\nof a Smith and Wesson pistol with live ammunition in West<br>\nJakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Heri has been allegedly absent from the army for three years<br>\nand is being held at West Jakarta Police station for questioning.<\/p>\n<p>Another suspect, 42-year-old businessman Wibijanto, was<br>\narrested following a raid at the latter&apos;s residence in Kelapa<br>\nGading, North Jakarta, during which police seized an automatic<br>\nScorpion rifle, a revolver, a Remington gun and 50 rounds of<br>\nammunition.<\/p>\n<p>Police said during the raid that Wibijanto failed to show a<br>\nlicense for his collection of weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Police seized an FNC rifle from suspect Ronover Arvian<br>\nPardede, alias Coky, a resident of Jl. Mesjid, Bendungan Hilir,<br>\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;To develop our ongoing operation, we have coordinated with<br>\nthe customs and excise office and the port and airport<br>\nauthorities in a bid to prevent the illegal entry of imported<br>\nweapons into Jakarta,&quot; Sofjan said.<\/p>\n<p>During the Brantas Jaya operation, police arrested 26 suspects<br>\nfor offenses committed on public transportation and confiscated<br>\nsix homemade guns and 25 sharp weapons.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The suspects were mostly caught in the act, and four of them<br>\nwere shot for resisting arrest,&quot; Sofjan said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the two operations, police also launched a raid<br>\nto enforce traffic regulations, code-named Zebra Jaya 2001.<\/p>\n<p>The traffic operation was carried out in traffic congested<br>\nareas, such as Jl. Gatot Subroto in South Jakarta, Jl. Sudirman<br>\nin South Jakarta, Jl. Kramat Raya in Central Jakarta, Jl.<br>\nMargonda Raya in Depok and Jl. Letjen S. Parman in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Sofjan said that 812 people were given tickets over the past<br>\ntwo days.<\/p>\n<p>Four hundred and twelve motorcyclists were ticketed for not<br>\nwearing helmets, 320 people for not carrying complete vehicle<br>\nregistration and 72 others for violating traffic signs.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We will continue our operations and we apologize if they<br>\ncause any inconvenience to motorists or motorcyclists, but this<br>\nis in everyone&apos;s best interest,&quot; Sofjan said.
