Illegal timber confiscated<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A team for forest supervision has confiscated
\n5,000 cubic meters of illegal timber from South Sumatra.<\/p>\n
The team also confiscated on Thursday 18 ships which carried
\ntimber without valid documentation, City Military Spokesman Lt.
\nCol. Didi Supandi said recently in a press release made available
\nto The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Twelve of the ships entered the capital through the Kali Baru
\ntimber port, five through Sunda Kelapa harbor and two through
\nTanjung Priok harbor, all in North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The team, the members of which are city officials, military
\npersonnel, police, coast guards and forestry office staffers, was
\nofficially established by Governor Surjadi Soedirdja on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Jakarta is one of the main destinations of illegal timber from
\nSumatra.<\/p>\n
The city administration suffered a loss of Rp 500 billion in
\ntaxes due to illegal sales of timber last year.<\/p>\n
Chief of the team, Col. Prabowo Suharto said that the
\nconfiscated timber is being kept at the Tanah Merah terminal in
\nTanjung Priok, North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
"The smugglers will be sent to court," he said. He did not
\ndisclose the number of smugglers. (29)<\/p>",
