Illegal logging in Morowali reserve<\/p>\n
PALU, Central Sulawesi: Illegal logging has been rampant in the
\nMorowali Nature Reserve (CAM) in Morowali regency, Central
\nSulawesi, over the last three years.<\/p>\n
Yusran Zainuddin, an activist of Sahabat Alam Morowali, a non-
\ngovernmental organization engaged in nature conservation, said on
\nWednesday in Kolonodale, east of Palu, that a recent probe
\nconducted by the institute had caught a group taking logs out of
\nthe reserve.<\/p>\n
"The target areas of illegal logging in CAM are Tandoyado,
\nTambayoli and Monu, while the loot is transported by motorboat to
\nBungku Tengah and Kolonodale," he said.<\/p>\n
A number of Wana tribesmen inhabiting CAM, according to
\nZainuddin, have also complained about the frequent whirring of
\nchainsaws in the reserve, where only eight rangers are assigned
\nto guard the 225,000-hectare zone.<\/p>\n
At least 1,760 people of the Wana ethnic group live in the
\nMorowali reserve, along with various endemic wildlife species
\nlike anoa (wild dwarf buffalo) and babi rusa (deer-hog). --
