Illegal logging hurts industry<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono promised on
\nWednesday to intensify the government's crackdown on illegal
\nlogging as it had depleted raw materials supplies to small and
\nmedium-scale handicrafts producers.<\/p>\n
"They (illegal loggers) are irresponsible, destroying forests
\nfor their personal gain. Their profits kill small and
\nmedium-scale handicrafts producers. I would ask you to report to
\nme or the government should you know of anyone at large who is
\ninvolved in illegal logging," Susilo said while opening the 7th
\nIndonesian Handicrafts Expo at the Jakarta Convention Center in
\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The government has set up task forces to curb illegal logging
\nin Papua and Kalimantan, and will restrict the export of rattan.<\/p>\n
Association of Indonesian Handicrafts Exporters and Craftsmen
\n(ASEPHII) Rudy Lengkong earlier asked the President to ensure
\nadequate supplies of raw materials for handicrafts producers.<\/p>\n
The expo features 750 small and medium-scale handicrafts
\nfirms. It is open to the public until Sunday. -- JP<\/p>",
