Illegal fees at Soekarno-Hatta<\/p>\n

On Oct. 18, my Thai guests arrived at Soekarno-Hatta
\nInternational Airport, and were only permitted to leave the
\nimmigration checkpoint after they had each paid US$10 to the
\nimmigration officers in charge, who had detained their passage
\nfor no clear reason.<\/p>\n
Earlier, a Singaporean guest also experienced the same thing
\nat the same airport, even though nationals of Association of
\nSoutheast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries are exempt from
\nvisa-on-arrival fees.<\/p>\n
If every single foreign guest pays an illegal fee of $10,
\nimagine how much money immigration officers at Soekarno-Hatta --
\nthe country's main port of entry -- can collect in a month.<\/p>\n
More importantly, however, the collection of these illegal
\nfees will only tarnish Indonesia's reputation and bring shame to
\nour citizens.<\/p>\n
It is time that appropriate action was taken to ensure that
\nour immigration officers perform their duties professionally.<\/p>\n
