PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) emphasises that safety at level\ncrossings is a serious concern requiring consistent handling. The\nexistence of illegal crossings at various points poses significant risks\ndue to inadequate safeguards and their location outside official\nregulations, thereby increasingly limiting the safe space between train\noperations and public activities.<\/p>\n
KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin stated that every crossing must\nbe in a condition meeting safety standards to ensure protection for the\npublic and train journeys.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery crossing point has safety implications. For locations not\nmeeting requirements, handling is carried out jointly with the\ngovernment through applicable mechanisms, including closures. This step\nis taken to safeguard public safety and train operations,\u201d said\nBobby.<\/p>\n
He added that organising crossings is part of safety maintenance\nefforts requiring involvement from various parties, both in terms of\nregulations, infrastructure, and on-site behaviour.<\/p>\n
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba explained\nthat there are currently 3,888 level crossings in Java and Sumatra, of\nwhich 1,089 are illegal crossings, thus requiring joint attention in\ntheir management.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis data shows that crossing spaces still have risk levels that\nneed to be managed consistently. Closing illegal crossings is part of\nthe organisation to ensure interactions between train journeys and road\ntraffic occur more safely,\u201d Anne clarified.<\/p>\n
From 2017 to April 2026, KAI together with stakeholders has closed\n2,220 illegal crossings as part of risk control measures at vulnerable\npoints. This effort aims to create more managed safe spaces and reduce\naccident potentials at crossings.<\/p>\n
This step is directed to limit crossing spaces that do not meet\nsafety standards and guide the public to safer crossing points.<\/p>\n
KAI, along with the Ministry of Transportation and local governments,\nhas also addressed 564 crossing points through closures or upgrades to\nnon-level crossings, such as building flyovers and underpasses. These\nefforts continue in line with field needs.<\/p>\n
In the period from 2024 to April 2026, KAI is strengthening safety\nmeasures through 4,988 socialisation activities at crossings, 687\neducations in schools and places of worship, and 1,745 installations of\nwarning media at various locations.<\/p>\n
This approach is aimed at building collective awareness that safety\nat crossings is closely linked to a culture of traffic discipline.<\/p>\n
Anne added that safety practices in various countries show that\npublic discipline is a key factor in reducing accident risks. The habit\nof stopping, looking left and right, and waiting until it is truly safe\nbefore crossing becomes part of daily behaviour that needs to be\nmaintained consistently.<\/p>\n
\u201cTrains serve hundreds to thousands of passengers per journey and\nrequire long braking distances. In certain conditions, trains cannot\nstop suddenly. Therefore, discipline when crossing at level crossings is\nvery important. When this habit is practised collectively, safety can be\nbetter maintained,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
KAI invites all parties to maintain order at crossings as part of\ncollective safety. Crossings that have been organised and closed are\npart of efforts to protect the public.<\/p>\n
