Illegal buildings along river pulled down<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The law and order officers of the West Jakarta
\nmayoralty are currently launching a cleanup operation along
\nCisadane river.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of illegal buildings along the river are being
\ndemolished in line with the mayoralty's drive to clean up illegal
\nbuildings from the riverbanks.<\/p>\n
The demolition of the illegal buildings is in line with
\nRegional Regulations No. 11\/1988 on public security and No.
\n5\/1988 on sanitation in the Jakarta area.<\/p>\n
By the end of this year all riverbanks in the mayoralty are
\nexpected to be clear of all illegal buildings, Karsidin, head of
\nthe local law and order bureau, said.<\/p>\n
\"The riverbanks will be earmarked for greenbelts,\" Karsidin
\ntold the Kompas daily.<\/p>\n
He said that the West Jakarta mayoralty has informed all
\nsquatters along the Cisadane river of the demolition plan. After
\nthe Cisadane river, demolitions will be conducted along the
\nPesanggrahan riverbank in Kebon Jeruk.<\/p>\n
Abuhi Siara, an official of the mayoralty's park office, said
\nthat the demolition is part of the city administration river
\ncleanup program called Prokasih.<\/p>\n
A number of local residents whose houses will be cleared said
\nthat principally they support the administration program.
\n\"However, it would be wiser if the demolition is conducted after
\nthe Idul Fitri festivity and not today when we are still in the
\nfirst days of the fasting month,\" they said.<\/p>\n
\"We just ask the city administration to allow us to stay here
\nuntil Idul Fitri,\" Yuwono, one of the residents, said.<\/p>\n
Similar demolitions will also be conducted along Opak river in
\nNorth Jakarta after Idul Fitri. Over 1,000 people living in
\nPenjaringan and Ancol subdistricts will be ordered to vacate the
