        "content": "<p>Illegal aliens stranded on Sumba<\/p>\n<p>KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: About 60 foreigners from Iraq,<br>\nPakistan, Turkey and Afghanistan remain stranded on Sumba island<br>\nafter their small boat developed engine trouble on the way to<br>\nAustralia.<\/p>\n<p>They are currently being sheltered at a hotel in West Sumba<br>\nunder the authority of the East Nusa Tenggara Police pending the<br>\narrival of MV Awu, which will transport them back to either<br>\nKupang or Surabaya, East Java.<\/p>\n<p>The foreigners left Pasuruan, East Java, aboard the Sabar<br>\nMenanti motorboat.<\/p>\n<p>However, it encountered engine trouble and had to dock at<br>\nWaikelo Port on Sumba island.<\/p>\n<p>It is not known whether they have visas to enter Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Acting head of the immigration office here, Surya Pranata,<br>\nsaid on Saturday he had checked with West Sumba authorities and<br>\nfound that 37 of the 60 foreign nationals held valid passports<br>\nand Indonesian visas.<\/p>\n<p>\"There are 37 people who have passports. The rest do not, they<br>\nare relatives of the others,\" he said as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n<p>Kupang has become a popular gateway for illegal immigrants<br>\nseeking to sneak into Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Immigration officials here last year recorded 166 immigration<br>\nviolations.<\/p>",
