        "content": "<p>Illegal Afghans flock to Singkawang<\/p>\n<p>PONTIANAK, West Kalimantan: Singkawang Immigration office has<br>\nbeen overwhelmed by an influx of illegal immigrants from war-torn<br>\nAfghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past two weeks alone, the office has dealt with 32<br>\nAfghans transferred by Singkawang police.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We are overwhelmed by the illegal arrivals of Afghans,&quot;<br>\nSingkawang immigration office chief Yusuf said as quoted by<br>\nAntara.<\/p>\n<p>The Afghans arrived in two batches. The first group of 17<br>\npeople landed on July 30 and the other 15 on Aug. 9. Most of them<br>\ndo not have any official documents.<\/p>\n<p>The Afghans were found stranded in Sambas regency by locals,<br>\nwho took them to the police.<\/p>\n<p>Yusuf said that the illegal aliens were put in the Singkawang<br>\nprison while awaiting help from the United Nations High<br>\nCommission for Refugees (UNHCR) in Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>He said that he has yet to discover whether the Afghans were<br>\nstranded in Sambas on their way to another country or if<br>\nIndonesia was their destination country.
