Illegal abortion must be stopped<\/p>\n
SURABAYA, East Java: Muslim organizations Muhammadiyah and
\nNadhlatul Ulama (NU) urged local police to take stern action
\nagainst five suspects in an abortion case in the city.<\/p>\n
\"The police must bring the five suspects to court in an
\nattempt to eliminate the practice of illegal abortion which is
\nrife in the city,\" Fasich Apt, chairman of the local chapter of
\nMuhammadiyah, said here on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The five suspects were arrested in a recent crackdown on a
\nclinic believed to have provided medical facilities for
\nabortions.<\/p>\n
He asserted that all religious institutions had an obligation
\nto uphold morality and detect all violations of religious and
\nmoral teachings in society.<\/p>\n
Ali Maschan Musa, chairman of the local chapter of NU,
\nconcurred saying that law enforcers should discourage illegal
\nabortion.<\/p>\n
\"The police must take strict actions not only against the
\ndoctors but also against health workers in the clinics and the
\nwomen who have abortions,\" he said.<\/p>\n
According to data at the provincial police's detective unit,
\nthe five suspects were Wiwik Suliyani, a teacher, her
\ndaughter-in-law Lusiana, gynecologist Achdyat Premedi, Retnowati,
