Leo<\/p>\n<p>Tertiani ZB Simanjuntak, The Jakarta Post\/Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>As many Jakarta residents come to terms with the increasing<br>\nprices of basic necessities following the Oct. 1 fuel price<br>\nhikes, the Urban Poor Consortium (UPC) has persisted with its<br>\nprotests of the government's policy.<\/p>\n<p>Since Thursday, the first day of Idul Fitri partying, dozens<br>\nof UPC members, claiming to be victims of the fuel policy, have<br>\nbeen staging silent protests outside the presidential palace in<br>\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>The protests are meant to remind both the government and the<br>\npublic of how the poor were most affected by the acute inflation.<\/p>\n<p>With their bodies chained together in the protest on Saturday,<br>\nthe police had a hard time dispersing them. Officers were forced<br>\nto break the locks, one by one (see photo).<\/p>\n<p>\"The police detained 24 protesters on Saturday. Our members<br>\nare now being represented by lawyers from the Legal Aid Institute<br>\nfor Women (LBH Apik), the Commission for Missing Persons and<br>\nVictims of Violence (Kontras) as well as the Jakarta Legal Aid<br>\nInstitute (LBH Jakarta),\" UPC activist Ari Ujianto told The<br>\nJakarta Post.<\/p>\n<p>Four of them were forced to take a urine test as the police<br>\nsuspected that they had been under the influence of drugs, he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>He also claimed that the Central Jakarta Police had tortured<br>\n30 of the protesters that were detained after Friday's protests.<br>\nThose 30 were released on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\"We have sent a complaint letter to the National Commission on<br>\nHuman Rights (Komnas HAM) over the bad conduct by the police,\"<br>\nAri asserted.<\/p>\n<p>The rights commission and the police have an agreement that<br>\nprotesters who hold peaceful demonstrations must not be treated<br>\nbadly.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the alleged mistreatment, UPC will continue with the<br>\nmore protests in the next few days.<\/p>",
