Deputy Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and\nCorrections Otto Hasibuan has said that an ideal intellectual property\nsystem is one that is clearest, fair, balanced, and capable of\ndelivering social and economic benefits.<\/p>\n
\u201cAn ideal intellectual property system is not the most rigid one,\u201d\nOtto said at the 2026 National Intellectual Property Coordination Forum\nin Jakarta on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
He argued that overly weak intellectual property protection would\nreduce incentives to innovate and create. Conversely, overly strict\nprotection could hinder knowledge transfer and the public interest.<\/p>\n
In the contemporary economy, Otto said, the value of a product no\nlonger stems solely from its raw materials and production processes, but\nalso from innovation, design, branding, reputation, creative works, and\nrelated knowledge.<\/p>\n
Therefore, Otto said, the issue facing Indonesia today is not about\nthe importance of intellectual property, but rather whether the country\nhas developed a system capable of integrating creation, protection, and\nutilisation as a whole.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn this regard, there is still much work that we must complete\ntogether,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He noted that the granting of such rights is not intended to create a\nmonopoly, but to create balance.<\/p>\n
Accordingly, he stressed that creators and innovators need to receive\nproper recognition so that creative and innovative activity can continue\nto flourish.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the public must also feel the benefits of the\ndissemination of knowledge, technology, culture, education, health, and\nfair business competition.<\/p>\n
Otto added that Indonesia has enormous potential in intellectual\nproperty, with public creativity developing across various regions.<\/p>\n
In addition, he said, universities and research institutions generate\nknowledge and inventions, business actors build brands and designs, and\nindigenous and local communities preserve traditional knowledge,\ncultural expressions, and products with specific economic\ncharacteristics.<\/p>\n
