IDB asked to continue assistance<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto yesterday asked the Islamic
\nDevelopment Bank (IDB) to continue its efforts to help solve
\nproblems in developing countries.<\/p>\n
After meeting with Soeharto here, the bank's acting president
\nAbdullah Al-Qomar also quoted Soeharto as calling on the IDB to
\ncontinue its social projects in Indonesia to improve the incomes
\nof villagers.<\/p>\n
Praising Indonesia's economic successes, Al-Qomar said many
\ndeveloping countries in Africa had spoken of their desire to
\nlearn from Indonesia's economic management and self-sufficiency
\nin rice.<\/p>\n
He quoted Soeharto as saying that Indonesia is willing to
\nshare its experience in achieving rice self-sufficiency with
\nother developing countries.<\/p>\n
Indonesia, which used to be one of the world largest rice
\nimporters, reached sufficiency in rice in 1984. In recognition of
\nthe success, the Food and Agriculture Organization awarded a
\nmedal to President Soeharto in 1986.<\/p>\n
Al-Qomar said the IDB will likely increase its loans to
\nIndonesia to approximately US$140 million this year from $120
\nmillion last year. He added that the amount of IDB credit
\nextended to Indonesia has grown by 10 percent per annum during
\nthe last four years.<\/p>\n
Al-Qomar, who was accompanied by Minister of Finance Mar'ie
\nMuhammad during his meeting with Soeharto, is here to discuss
\nIDB's annual meeting scheduled to be held here in November.<\/p>\n
"This occasion serves as a good chance for this country to
\nintroduce its development concept as well as attract foreign
\ninvestment," Al-Qomar was quoted by Antara as saying. (rid)<\/p>",
