ID stickers to be issued for campaigners' cars<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police will issue official car stickers, in the
\npolitical parties' colors, to campaigners for the general
\nelection campaign period.<\/p>\n
City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said yesterday the
\ncompulsory stickers were green, for the Moslem-based United
\nDevelopment Party (PPP), yellow, for the ruling Golkar, and red,
\nfor the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI).<\/p>\n
Polling day is May 29.<\/p>\n
The stickers, each bearing a code number, will allow
\ncampaigners to travel in only one of the eight areas of Greater
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said the stickers for campaigners' cars were to stop
\nsupporters of one party in one area, entering another area during
\nthe campaign period.<\/p>\n
Golkar supporters with Central Jakarta stickers on their cars,
\nfor example, will not be allowed to go to Golkar campaign
\nactivities in other areas.<\/p>\n
\"By limiting mass gatherings of supporters in an area, we hope
\nthe campaigning will run in an orderly manner,\" Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
He said the codes on the stickers would be different for each
\nof the eight areas.<\/p>\n
Central Jakarta will be coded one; North, two; West, three;
\nSouth, four; East, five; Tangerang, six; Bekasi, seven; and
\nDepok, eight.<\/p>\n
Each party was to see that law and order are maintained during
\nthe campaign, Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
\"Each party is responsible for its supporters,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Police would help control all the activities during the
\ncampaigns and impose sanctions on campaigners who violate
\nregulations, Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
Thousands of police officers have been preparing for the
\ncampaign.<\/p>\n
City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata yesterday inspected
\nhis fully armed men, they have 127 cars and 476 motorcycles for
\nthe campaign period.<\/p>\n
Hamami asked them to do their utmost to ensure the campaigns
\nrun well, and to prevent crime.<\/p>\n
\"We are in a war against crime,\" he said.<\/p>\n
