Icuk launches 'Total Badminton'<\/p>\n

The badminton training program in Indonesia still lacks a
\nscientific approach, former world champion Icuk Sugiarto said
\nhere on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\"The training program is conducted mostly based on the
\nexperience of the trainers. This is because books on badminton
\nare still rare,\" Icuk said while speaking at the launching of his
\nbook entitled Total Badminton.<\/p>\n
\"This book can hopefully act as a guide to proper training
\nmethods, and help further promote badminton development in
\nIndonesia,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"We are rich in badminton talent, and if this is developed
\nfrom an early age with the help of a scientific approach, we
\nshould not worry about losing our badminton domination,\" he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
The 205-page book deals with five basic topics: badminton
\nequipment, techniques, psychology, tactics and strategy, and the
\nphysical aspect.<\/p>\n
Though its writing also involved academics -- M. Furqon and S.
\nKunta P. -- the book bears the unmistakable stamp of Icuk.<\/p>\n
A photograph of him in action during the 1983 World
\nChampionship, where he emerged as the champion, appears on the
\nfront cover together with the logo of the Indonesian Badminton
\nAssociation (PBSI).<\/p>\n
Browsing through the book, the reader is presented with
\ncopious other photos of Icuk. On the back cover, there is a list
\nof Icuk's achievement's during his heyday.<\/p>\n
\"As the world champion of the past generation, I feel
\ncompelled to pass on my experience to the current generation. I
\nwant to share my experience as a player, trainer and official ...
\nthrough this book,\" he said. Icuk is the chairman of the Jakarta
\nchapter of the PBSI.<\/p>\n
M.F. Siregar and Ferry Soneville, two of the country's major
\nbadminton figures, hailed the publication of the book, saying
\nthat it was \"a masterpiece\". They added that they were proud that
\na former player had spared the time to write about the sport.<\/p>\n
Siregar, who is the PBSI official in charge of research and
\ndevelopment, praised Icuk as being a badminton player who had
\nformed his identity as a champion, spread information and his
\nknowledge to other people, and carried on his \"championship
\nspirit\" off the court.<\/p>\n
While voicing his own appreciation, Ferry, who was the 1958
\nAll-England champion, criticized the book as lacking religious
\ncontent.<\/p>\n
\"Don't forget that we have been dominating the badminton world
\nwith the help of God's power. Without this we could do nothing,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>",
