        "content": "<p>ICRC steps up probe into Irian Jaya case<\/p>\n<p>JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: The Geneva-based International Committee<br>\nof the Red Cross (ICRC) has stepped up its probe into the alleged<br>\ninvolvement of the ICRC in the 1996 massacre in Mapnduma, Jaya<br>\nWijaya regency.<\/p>\n<p>Bernard Barret, of the Jakarta ICRC office, told The Jakarta<br>\nPost in Jayapura on Tuesday that Swiss Pierre Obuchowicz has been<br>\nhired by the ICRC Assembly Council, the highest body of the ICRC,<br>\nto conduct a plenary analysis of the alleged involvement of the<br>\nICRC during military operations three years ago to release<br>\nhostages abducted by the Free Papua Movement (OPM), led by Kelly<br>\nKwalik and Danies Yudas Kogeya.<\/p>\n<p>Investigations conducted by the Jayapura Institution of Human<br>\nRights Studies and Advocacy (IHRSTAD), the Roman Catholic Church<br>\nof Jayapura Diocese, the Evangelical Christian Church Synod and<br>\nthe Indonesian Bible Camp Church indicated that Sylviane Bonadei,<br>\na staff member of the ICRC, was involved in the military<br>\noperation initiated by the Indonesian Army's Special Force<br>\nCommand (Kopassus).<\/p>\n<p>\"He (Obuchowicz) was chosen because he is considered capable<br>\nin this matter, as he knows much about ICRC but does not work for<br>\nICRC,\" Bernard said.<\/p>\n<p>Obuchowicz, who has been in Jayapura since Monday, is<br>\nscheduled to leave for Timika on Thursday.
