ICMI's challenge<\/p>\n
President Soeharto, in his address at the opening of the
\nsecond congress of the Association of Indonesian Moslem
\nIntellectuals (ICMI), asked the organization to be aware of the
\nuniversal nature of Islamic teachings and of specific
\npeculiarities distinct to all nations.<\/p>\n
Such an awareness, according to the Head of State, is nothing
\nnew. Indonesian leaders adhering to the Moslem faith have always
\nbeen aware that there must not be conflict between religious
\nteachings, which are universal in nature, and the various
\nproblems which confront Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The Head of State expressed his conviction that ICMI, as a
\nrepository of Moslem intellectuals, would not fall into the trap
\nof egoism or ignoring the interests of other groups in society.
\nThe President expressed his hope that ICMI would always be a
\nnational force pushing the nation forward.<\/p>\n
The President's words should be given seriously thought by
\nICMI. In addition, the public's hope that ICMI will not develop
\ninto an elitist organization must also be heeded. These hopes
\nappear to already have been answered by Habibie. In his account
\nas general chairman of ICMI, Habibie made it clear that ICMI was
\nbeing developed to enable Indonesia face the challenges of
\nglobalization and industrialization with proper moral, ethical
\nand spiritual guidance.<\/p>\n
It is obvious that these challenges -- including the
\nrealization of our great potential to fulfill the hopes of the
\npeople -- will be easier to meet when fortified by moral, ethical
\nand spiritual strength. This is one challenge ICMI will face in
\nthe future.<\/p>\n
